The Grand Opening of the new museum building drew a crowd estimated at over 3000. Four hot air balloons floated past those early risers partaking of the pancake breakfast. A special balloon which, when inflated, turned out to be a huge cow landed just north of the new museum, after hovering nearly on top of the museum building. It was open house in the museum all day, with many displays from other aviation groups. A Tiger Moth, flown by Gordon Jones, was the lead aircraft for the flypast. It was followed by two D.H. Chipmunks, a Harvard and four CAF Tutors in tight formation. A Pitts Special flew aerobatics after the main flypast. Our guest speaker at the banquet was Reg Lane DSO DFC & Bar, a retired general with the CAF who flew the first Lancaster (KB700) to Britain in 1943 and was c/o of No. 405 Squadron. |
