Following 405 Squadron's conversion from Wellingtons to Halifaxes, W/C 'Johnny' Fauquier led fifteen of the new bombers into combat for the first time on 30/31 May 1942 as part of the first 'Thousand Bomber Raid'. One of the first assigned to the squadron, Halifax W1095 (LQ-N) was flown that night by P/O Ross Baltzer from Harrow, Ontario. Two nights later, P/O Baltzer was killed while flying another Halifax. The nose art on Halifax W1095 featured the 'Nut Brothers' from a popular newspaper comic strip that ran from 1921 until 1963.
