The first Canadian-Built Lancaster to be sent to the UK, 'Ruhr Express' flew two operations with 405 Squadron before completing its service with 419 Squadron. As it attempted to land following its 49th operation on January 2 1945, the 'Ruhr Express' experienced hydraulic problems and its flaps would not deploy properly. It overshot the runway and ended up in a farmer's field where it collided with a trench digger. Amid exploding ammunition the crew escaped but fire destroyed the aircraft.
